Claudia Behringer-Smith, Afternoon Coordinator & Assistant Teacher – Sprouts

Hi everyone! My name is Claudia, and I recently graduated from the University of Central Florida where I studied psychology and education. I have worked predominantly with children ages 7-17 in wilderness settings, and I fully believe that the most growth and independence is found in the outdoors.

I grew up in central Florida, but consider North Carolina my second home as I was lucky enough to spend every summer here. As a staff member at Camp Merrie-Woode I was able to pursue my passions and help young girls discover their own through the boating program.

I am looking forward to learning from the incredible staff at Wild Oak and being a part of a community that fosters a learning environment conducive to growth both academically and independently.

Experience & Background

I studied psychology and education at the University of Central Florida, and earned my TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). During my time at UCF I worked for the University’s Outdoor Adventure Program as  a Head Trip Leader, and I was able to teach college aged students the hard and soft skills that can only be found through learning new skills in the outdoors.

It was at Camp Merrie-Woode that my love for outdoor recreation blossomed, and the past six summers I’ve worked for them as a cabin counselor, adventure staff member and waterfront director.

Favorite Things

I love spending time outdoors. I also enjoy painting, sewing, plants/gardening and playing my guitar. My main focus has been my daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed getting back in touch with my inner child and seeing the world again through a child’s eyes. I take joy in anything from a long evening walk to playing tag or hide and seek, splattering paint on canvas, or bird watching from the comfort of the living room couch!
